Objective: Determine the political, social, and economic impact of imperialim in Africa.

Agenda: Notes & Map Study

Today we are going to focus our attention on a specific region that was impacted by imperialism. Almost the entire continent of Africa was dominated by European imperial powers. Let’s see how that even happened and what the political, social, and economic effects are when foreign powers control a region.

Map Study

See me for a blank Imperialim in Africa map handout or print the one below!

Open up the online text book or use the in class textbooks and go to page 777.

Then follow these directions:

Step 1: Label all territories. Basic rule – If it’s in all capital letters, Label it!

Step 2: Color the map according to the map in the textbook. Create a key with labels (so we know what the colors mean)

Step 3: Answer these questions:

  • Which imperical power held the most land in Africa?
  • Which imperial power held the least land in Africa?
  • How long did it take for European powers to colonize Africa?

Our goal is to get through Step 1 today!

Today we ventured into a new region to see what happens when nationalism shows up in Central Europe. Just like Italy, what is now German was once divided into a lot of separate German States. However, their unification process is waaaaay different from what happened in Italy.

Agenda: Reading Comprehension Activity

Today we are going to continu to see Nationalism in action on the Italian peninsula. In the mid-19th century, Italy was divided into a bunch of different states. That all changes when nationalism takes hold and leads to the unification of the states into a single nation.

We continued to work at our tables and practiced some reading skills to get the story of Italian unification and also tried to understand how a story can change depending on who tells it!

Today we are going to focus on the First Read and Second Read portions of the assignment. To do this, we are going to create a one-pager that includes responses and pictures to the prompts in the First and Second Reads as well as some details from the resource powerpoint. ⏰

Step 1: Divide your paper into at least 5 or 6 sections in a design of your choice.

Step 2: Open the powerpoint and add 5 details from the slides into one of the sections on your one-pager

Step 3: Open the Google doc posted on Google Classroom and the reading resource link that takes you to Khan Academy.

Step 4: Complete the prompts for the First Close Read in one or more of the sections on your one-pager (depending on how much space you need!

Step 5: Complete the prompts for the Second Close Read in one or more of the sections on your one-pager.

Special Note: For the prompts asking for pictures/visuals. Choose 3 images in the reading and sketch them the best you can into your one-pager.

Nationalism spread not only across Europe, but also in Latin America. Today we are going to take a look at the various ways nationalism impacted regions in North And South America. Today we are going to finish up looking at what happened in the Americas in the 19th century.
